God Prepared His People in the Wilderness
Each year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, a feast dedicated to one of the greatest treasures of the Catholic faith: the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
For many people, a natural question arises:
How can God be present in a small piece of bread?
The answer takes us to the very heart of the Gospel.
The readings for this solemnity remind us that God began preparing His people centuries before the Last Supper.
When Israel journeyed through the wilderness, they faced hunger, fatigue, and uncertainty. It was there that God gave them manna, the mysterious bread that descended from heaven each morning.
Yet manna was much more than food.
It was preparation for something greater.
As Moses reminded the people:
“Man does not live by bread alone.”
That experience taught Israel that there are hungers no earthly food can satisfy: the hunger for love, hope, meaning, and ultimately, for God Himself.
The Bread of Life
In the Gospel, Jesus reveals Himself as the fulfillment of everything that manna foreshadowed.
He declares:
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”
Then He adds words that deeply shocked many who heard Him:
“My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.”
Many were scandalized. Yet Jesus did not take back His words or explain them away as a mere metaphor.
Instead, He reinforced them.
In fact, the original Greek text uses an even stronger expression when speaking about eating His flesh, a word that can be translated as “to chew” or “to gnaw.” Jesus wanted His listeners to understand that He was speaking about a concrete reality, not merely a symbolic image.
His words were preparing His disciples for what would take place at the Last Supper.
“This Is My Body”
On the night before He gave His life for us, Jesus took bread and said:
“This is my body.”
Then He took the cup and said:
“This is my blood.”
For twenty centuries, the Church has believed that in the Eucharist we receive far more than a symbol.
We receive Christ Himself, truly present and alive.
That is why Catholics adore the Eucharist.
We do not worship bread.
We worship Jesus Christ, present under the appearances of bread and wine.
One Body in Christ
Saint Paul reminds us that the Eucharist is not merely a personal act of devotion.
The bread is one.
Therefore, we who receive it become one body in Christ.
Every Holy Communion unites us more deeply with Christ and with one another.
The Eucharist calls us to live our faith not only inside the church building but also in our daily lives, especially in the way we love and serve others.
Corpus Christi Today
The Feast of Corpus Christi was established to publicly proclaim the Church’s faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
For this reason, Catholics throughout the world participate in Eucharistic processions, accompanying Our Lord through the streets of their cities and communities.
It is a visible proclamation that God did not choose to remain distant.
He chose to remain with us.
He chose to nourish us.
He chose to walk beside us.

Illness.
Moments of loneliness.
That is why, on this Solemnity of Corpus Christi, we invite you to do something simple.
If you have the opportunity, spend a few minutes in a Catholic church this week.
Visit the tabernacle.
Remain with Jesus.
No lengthy prayers are necessary.
Sometimes it is enough simply to sit in silence before the One who never stops accompanying us.
