Encounter with Christ in the Eucharist

Eucharistic Prayers

I adore You, Devoted (Prayer of Saint Thomas Aquinas)

I adore You with devotion, hidden God, truly hidden beneath these appearances. My heart submits completely to You, and surrenders completely when contemplating You.

In judging You, sight, touch, and taste are mistaken; but hearing is enough to firmly believe; I believe everything the Son of God has said: nothing is truer than this Word of truth.

On the Cross, only Divinity was hidden, but here Humanity is also hidden; nevertheless, I believe and confess both, and I ask for what that repentant thief asked for.

I do not see the wounds as Thomas saw them, but I confess that You are my God: make me believe more and more in You, hope in You, and love You.

Memorial of the death of the Lord! Living Bread, who gives life to man: grant that my soul may live on You and always savor Your sweetness.

Lord Jesus, good Pelican, cleanse me, the unclean, with your Blood, a single drop of which can free the whole world from all crimes.

Jesus, whom I now see hidden, I beg you to fulfill what I so long for: that when I look at your face face to face, I may be happy seeing your glory.

Amen.

Anima Christi (Soul of Christ)

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, intoxicate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, comfort me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Your wounds, hide me
Do not allow me to separate myself from You
From the evil enemy, defend me
At the hour of my death, call me
And command me to come to You
So that with Your saints I may praise You
For ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of Saint Alphonsus Maria Liguori

My Lord Jesus Christ, who for love of mankind are present night and day in this sacrament, full of piety and love, waiting, calling, and receiving all who come to visit you: I believe that you are present in the sacrament of the altar. I adore you from the depths of my nothingness and I thank you for all the favors you have shown me, and especially for having given yourself in this sacrament, for having granted me your most loving Mother as my advocate and for having called me to visit you in this church.

I now adore your Most Holy Heart and I desire to adore it for three purposes: first, in thanksgiving for this most distinguished benefit; second, to compensate you for all the injuries you receive from your enemies in this sacrament; and finally, desiring to adore you with this visit in all the places on earth where you are sacramentally anointed with less worship and abandonment.

Tantum Ergo (Eucharistic Hymn by Saint Thomas Aquinas)

Let us reverently venerate so high a sacrament,
and let the ancient liturgical order give way to the new rite.
May faith add what is lacking
to the defect of the senses.
To the begetter and to the begotten
—the Father and the Son—
Praise, joy,
health, honor, strength,
and blessing.
And to the one who proceeds from both
—the Holy Spirit—
let equal praise be given.
V: You gave them bread from heaven to eat.
R: Containing in itself all delight.
Amen.

Act of Love for Jesus in the Eucharist.

O Jesus my Savior, this is truly an excess of love: to have enclosed yourself in the Eucharist.
We were certainly not worthy that you should dwell in person in our churches, nor that you should live within us.
With a single word, you could have worked all the graces, all that you work for us through this admirable Sacrament.
An image of you or a cross of yours was enough to sanctify the temple and to demand our most humble adoration; but you are here among us as God and man, full of glory, grace, and truth.
This, O Incarnate Word, is the ultimate of your benefits!
Grant that this excessive love, which you have had for all of us, and especially for me, may be deeply imprinted in our hearts.
Enkindle this heart, purify it, bless it, and fill it with love in Your divine presence, You, who are a bonfire of love capable of setting ablaze all the Angels and all men who cannot have their flames except from Your fire.
My God, I love You with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my spirit, and with all my strength; I have no other desire than to love You. You are the center of true love, and my heart is totally penetrated by the greatness and excellence of this benefit.
Yes, my Lord: I have but one heart, and it is all for You.
My Jesus, I love and adore Your infinity, Your divinity, Your Most Holy Humanity, Your Body, Your Blood, Your Soul, and all that is sublime in this divine Sacrament.
But, O Lord, who can love You without Your holy help? From this little throne, then, where You make Your loving fire, when You see me cold in Your holy service. My God, I love you not only for the good you do me, but also for the glory you receive from your own humiliation and for the joy you experience in the salvation and spiritual progress of those fortunate enough to visit and worship you.
My Jesus, bless me before I leave this holy place, from which I would never want to leave to be near you. However, wherever I may be,
my soul will exalt itself in remembrance of you and cry out with the Royal Prophet: “Who is equal to you, my Lord? Who is like you?”

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi before the Blessed Sacrament

We adore you, Lord Jesus Christ,
here and in all the churches of the world,
and we bless you,
because with your holy cross you redeemed the world.

Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving by St. Thomas Aquinas

I give you thanks, Lord Almighty Father, eternal God, that to me, a sinner,
your unworthy servant, without any merit and only through your mercy, you have deigned
to nourish me with the Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I beseech you that this Holy Communion may not be an occasion of punishment for my soul,
but a salutary intercession of forgiveness.

May this Holy Communion be for me an armor of faith, a shield of good will,
the death of my vices, the banishment of all my carnal appetites, and
an increase of charity, patience, and all the virtues. May it be a worthy defense
against all the enemies of my soul. May it be a perfect remedy for my spirit;
perpetual friendship with you, my true God and Lord; and the seal of my death.

Blessed One, I pray that You will be pleased to lead this sinner to that ineffable banquet
where You, with Your Son and the Holy Spirit, are for all the saints, true Light, complete satisfaction, lasting joy, consummate happiness, and perfect happiness.

Through Christ Himself our Lord.

Amen.

Blessed be God

the fruit of Your redemption.

You who live and reign
for ever and ever.
